City-Led/Private Partnership to Provide 40,000 Low-Income San Francisco School Children with 2.6 Million Dollars of School and Hygiene Supplies Over Next Three Years
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – Mayor Lee’s approval of $270,000 this year leads the partnership with the City and County of San Francisco, San Francisco Unified School District, Target and other businesses that will benefit more than 40,000 of our city’s students. The nonprofit organization K to College kicked off their distribution of school supply kits to all 250 students at El Dorado Elementary School with the Superintendent, Mayor’s Office, Target and other elected officials. The effort will also provide essential materials to students experiencing homelessness.
San Francisco Unified Superintendent Richard Carranza, Senior Advisor on Education and Family Services to Mayor Edwin Lee and School Board Member Hydra Mendoza, K to College Executive Director Benito Delgado-Olson, VP of Target Stores Meredith Klausner, and more than a dozen Target volunteers were on hand to distribute the donated supplies to the school’s excited students. Each guest spoke to the school about the importance of education and ensuring that all kids receive basic materials like those included in K to College’s school supply and dental kits.
“As a member of K to College’s Advisory Board, I’ve watched this organization grow to assist hundreds of thousands children and youth throughout California,” remarked Superintendent Carranza. “This great expansion to serve more than 40,000 San Francisco students over the next three years, making the district the single greatest beneficiary of the program, is a testament to what we can accomplish for our kids when we work together. I thank Target, the City, K to College and all involved for this tremendous partnership.”

Lee. “Working with the school district, Target, other business leaders, and K to College, we were able to find an efficient solution to ensure our most vulnerable students receive essential supplies as they begin the new school year. The challenge for us will be to take this success in San Francisco and apply it to other children and youth in need elsewhere, particularly the state’s 300,000 homeless children and youth.” This will be the first year K to College serves children in every county in California.
By working with key partners and serving kids throughout the state, the organization is able to achieve tremendous economies of scale and centralize in-kind gifts, dramatically reducing costs. In San Francisco, the result is an ability to provide each student served by the program with a kit containing $65-70 of basic supplies at approximately one-third of the cost, with similar savings on other materials. The kits include items such as white boards, binders, paper, writing utensils, art supplies and other materials. The dental kits include a bilingual pamphlet and will be coupled with oral health education programs.
